Mahendra Singh Dhoni was born on 7 July 1981. M S Dhoni or Mahi is a cricket player and was the former captain of the Indian cricket team. MD Dhoni Early Life:

Family Members: Mahendra Singh Dhoni was born in Ranchi, Bihar in a Hindu Rajput family. His paternal village Lwali is located in the Almora district of Uttarakhand. His parents shifted to Ranchi, where his father Pan Singh worked in MECON. Dhoni has a sister named Jayanti Gupta and a brother Narendra Singh Dhoni. From his early childhood days, he admired Adam Gilchrist,  Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachchan and Lata Mangeshkar.

School and Inclination to Games: He studied at DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali, Ranchi, Jharkhand. During his school days, he played at the district and club level in games such as badminton and football. He was sent to play cricket for a local cricket club and there he impressed everyone by his wicket-keeping skills. He was made wicketkeeper at the Commando Cricket Club from 1995 to 1998. Due to his end performance, he was for the 1997/98 season Vinoo Mankad Trophy Under-16 Championship and there he performed very well. Mahi concentrated on cricket after completing X grade. He became a Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) at Kharagpur railway station from 2001-2003, under South Eastern Railway in Midnapore in West Bengal.

MD Dhoni Early Career:

In 1998, when MS Dhoni was studying in class XII, selected by Deval Sahay to play for the Central Coal Fields Limited (CCL) team. He performed so well in every match that Deval Sahay decided to use his contacts in Bihar Cricket Association for his selection in Bihar team. Within a year, Dhoni moved from playing in CCL to the Bihar Ranji team. Later he was also the part of Bihar U-19 squad for the 1998–99 and scored 176 runs in 5 matches. Bihar U-19 cricket team advanced to the finals of 1999–2000 Cooch Behar Trophy, where he made 84 runs.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni Bihar Cricket Team:

Dhoni made his debut in Ranji Trophy for Bihar in 1999–2000 at the age of 18. He scored very well in his debut match against the Assam cricket team. Soon after this, he made his first century while playing for Bihar against Bengal in the 2000-01 season.

Mahi Career in Jharkhand Cricket Team:

Mahi’s performance in the 2002–03 season comprises of three half-centuries in the Ranji Trophy and two half-centuries in the Deodhar Trophy but this time, he started gaining recognition for his batting style. In the 2003-04 season, Dhoni scored a century (128 runs) against Assam in the first match of the Ranji ODI tournament. He became the part of East Zone squad and won the Deodhar Trophy 2003-04 season and scored 244 runs in 4 matches.

  • In the Duleep Trophy finals, Dhoni was selected over international cricketer Deep Dasgupta to represent the East Zone. There he scored a half-century in the second innings and this leads to show his talent. Dhoni was discovered by TRDO Prakash Poddar, the captain of Bengal in the 1960s. He sent a report to the National Cricket Academy.
  • He was well–praised for his efforts in 2003-04 in One Day format and was selected for India for a tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya. He scored a half-century and targeted 223 in a tri-nation match amongst Kenya, India A and Pakistan A. Later, Dhoni also scored 362 runs in 6 innings at an average of 72.40 and his performance in the series. His efforts attained attention from Indian captain Sourav Ganguly and Ravi Shastri.

Mahi Career in International Cricket:

ODI Career: MS Dhoni marked his presence in the Indian ODI team which unfortunately did not give a great start to his ODI career. Despite of an average series against Bangladesh, he was selected for the Pakistan ODI series.

  • Breakthrough: In the second march, Dhoni attained 148 in Visakhapatnam in his fifth one-day international from 123 deliveries.
  • He got only a few batting opportunities in ODI series and was promoted to number 3 in the third ODI at Sawai Mansingh Stadium (Jaipur).
  • In 2006, India scored 328 in 50 overs in which Dhoni contributed 68 runs in their first match of against Pakistan. In the third match of the series, MS Dhoni came scored 72 runs from 46 balls that help India take a 2–1 lead in the series.

World Cup:

  • Preparation for 2007 Cricket World Cup improved the India records 3–1 victories over West Indies and Sri Lanka and Dhoni attained 100 in both these series.
  • Dhoni was named for vice-captain of the ODI team for the series against South Africa in Ireland and India-England in seven-match ODI series. Dhoni, received a ‘B’ grade contract in December 2005 but was awarded an ‘A’ grade contract in June 2007. He was also elected as the captain of the Indian squad for the World Twenty20
  • In 2009, during the series between India and Australia, Dhoni hit 124 runs in just 107 balls. This leads to win 2009 ICC Champions Trophy.
  • In 2012, Pakistan appeared in India for a bilateral series. In the three-match ODI series, Dhoni scored top for India in all three innings
  • Dhoni became the only captain in international cricket claiming ICC trophies.
  • In November 2013, Dhoni became the second India batsman after Sachin Tendulkar to attain 1,000 or more ODI-runs against Australia.
  • India won the ODI series in England in 2014 against West Indies where Dhoni gave a good performance with the bat scoring a half-century in each series.[
  • In 2015 Cricket World Cup, Dhoni became the first Indian captain to win all group stage matches and wins against Pakistan, South Africa, the UAE, West Indies, Ireland and Zimbabwe.

Left the Captainship:

  • Dhoni left as a captain of India in January 2017 and headed towards ODI series at home against England.
  • In 2019 tour, Dhoni went past 10,000 ODI runs against England and became the fourth Indian and twelfth overall to do so.

ICC World Twenty20:

MS Dhoni was selected to lead World T20 in 2007 and started his captaincy and he led India to the ICC World Twenty 20 trophy in South Africa, with a victory over Pakistan on 24 September 2007. This made him the second Indian captain to have won a World Cup in any form of cricket, after Kapil Dev.

Retirement from International Cricket:

Dhoni took retirement from international cricket on 15 August 2020 by posting a video on Instagram.

  • ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade
  • He was also voted as the winner of the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade.

Personal Life:

Mahendra Singh Dhoni married Sakshi Singh Rawat on 4 July 2010. During the time of their marriage, she was working as a trainee at the Taj Bengal, Kolkata. He became father to a baby girl named Ziva on 6 February 2015.

Other than Cricket:

  • Along with Sahara India Pariwar, Mahi became the co-owner of Hockey India League
  • He also became co-ownerof Chennai-based football club Chennai in FC, a franchise of the Indian Super League.
  • He co-partnered Nagarjuna in buying a Supersport World Championship team, Mahi Racing Team India.
  • He launched his lifestyle brand SEVEN. He owns the footwear side of the brand and is also the brand ambassador of SEVEN.
  • In 2019, he invested in CARS24 and at the same time became the brand ambassador of the company
  • In June 2018, he became the brand ambassador for a Paint Company for three years.
