Ranveer Singh was born on 6 July 1985 in a Sindhi Hindu family in Mumbai to Anju and Jagjit Singh Bhavnani. His sister’s name is Ritika Bhavnani. His grandparents shifted to Mumbai from Karachi, present-day Pakistan, during the Partition of India. Ranveer Singh is the paternal grandson of Chand Burke, maternal third cousin of Sonam Kapoor, daughter of actor Anil Kapoor and wife Sunita Kapoor.
He wanted to be an actor from a long time. He participated in various school plays and debates. He studied in H.R. College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai. Besides studying in college, he focused on creative writing. After this, he studied in the United States and attained the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University. While he was studying in University, he started taking acting classes and took up theatre. After completing his studies, he moved to Mumbai in 2007. He worked for as a copywriter in advertising with several agencies such as O&M and J. Walter Thompson. He worked as an assistant director and attained acting.

In 2010, he was called for an audition by Shanoo Sharma, from Yash Raj Films for the lead role in the movie Band Baaja Baaraat. The female lead of the movie was Anushka Sharma. Following the movie, he signed Ladies vs Ricky Bahl opposite Anushka Sharma, Parineeti Chopra, Dipannita Sharma and Aditi Sharma.
He was acclaimed for Vikramaditya Motwane’s period romance Lootera in 2013, co-starring Sonakshi Sinha. In the same year, he appeared in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. In 2014, he appeared in Ali Abbas Zafar’s movie Gunday, along with Arjun Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Irrfan Khan.

Ranveer Singh appeared in Bajirao Mastani in 2015. Soon after this movie, he also appeared in the comedy-drama Dil Dhadakne Do produce by Farhan Akhtar.
